Formed in 1977, the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) is responsible for collecting signals intelligence, SIGINT. It operates Waihopai Station (codenamed Flintlock) near Blenheim as part of XKEYSCORE.

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS or SIS) is New Zealand's main domestic and counter-intelligence intelligence agency, responsible for HUMINT.

The Directorate of Defence Intelligence and Security (DDIS) was formed in 1967 as the Directorate of Defence Intelligence (DDI). It is responsible for military intelligence, which includes both specific intelligence for use at the operational level and broad assessments of the military capabilities and intentions of other countries.
